People's Choice Awards' Fabs and FAILS

Due to my lack of younger siblings Selena Gomez will never have any real relevance to my life or fashion opinions, but this dress is really cute and youthful on her without aging her.

Even though I hadn't the faintest idea of who Ashley Benson was before I looked her up on Wikipedia, this dress is really fascinating to look at and fits her really well. I'm also happy that she didn't do something foolish like over-accessorize and ruin the effect of the dress. She pulls of the dying fad of one-sleeved dresses nicely.

Katy Perry's face says it all, which is, "LOL THANKS BETSEY JOHNSON FOR MAKING ME A FAIRY PRINCESS!!!!!!1!!" All she needs is a wand that blows bubbles and the look is complete. I LOVE IT (And hey, at least she's not wearing fruit!).

Although Lyndsy Fonesca's look would probably have been better as a whole if it had been styled to look more formal and red carpet-y, this dress is suuuuper classy- and how cool are the feather details?

How does one keep one's cooter concealed when wearing a dress this short? Kristen Stewart could have left an inch or two on the hem and it still would have looked edgy and fitting for her style.

Taylor Swift decided to WOW us with a shocking new foray into fashion... oh wait. Never mind. She's wearing a flow-y, flesh-y toned dress, AGAIN. As if having only one facial expression wasn't boring enough.

Kate Walsh has been receiving a lot of praise for this look on the interwebs (notice the shoes, plz, pointy-toed heels are making a comeback), but her dress has kind of a Forever21-y vibe, don't you think? I'm not a huge fan of dresses with lots of tucking and draping like that.

Natalie Portman is looking SO cute in this baby bump-concealing dress, and at the risk of sounding as if I know her, this is totally something she would wear. And the shoes add a nice little pop as well!

It's funny how some celebrities choose to conceal their prego bellies and others... well...

Tee Hee!

Hmm did I miss any gems?

2011 People's Choice Awards: Red Carpet Jewelry Roundup

Fasten your leverbacks, jewelry hounds. Awards Season is upon us!

Last night's People's Choice Awards kicked off what is sure to be a sparkle-filled season of A-list gems and gowns - and the 'less is more' trend everyone has been squawking about was - indeed- on display.

With metallic minis ruling the fashion landscape last night, jewelry style stayed on the down low - with lots of metal looks making an appearance instead of huge doses of diamond bling.

Nude pumps and naked necklines are also trending big, with simple earring style ruling the red carpet on stars like Taylor Swift (in Amrapali) and Selena Gomez.

My best bejeweled look of the night has to go to the lovely Lucy Hale in a burnt orange mini from Ronal Abdala and a diamond ensemble also from Amrapali in 14kt Gold. Loving the color combo in a "Michelle Williams Oscar" kind of way.

And the worst? Sorry, but Natalie Portman's tiered purple Jason Wu does nothing to flatter the burgeoning baby bump - despite her sparkly Solange Azagury-Partridge mirror ball earrings.

Finally, Jennifer Aniston? I'm still just not that into your pants-suit/layered gold chain look from 2002. Bless you, but you gotta mix it up, sister.

Here are some more of my selects from last night. Any favorites? Nothing really knocked my socks off.

Jewelry Sparkles at the People's Choice Awards

It wasn't a jewelry blow-out like we diamond-obsessed folks hope for, but The People's Choice Awards did reveal some classy jewels, new color trends and a peak at awards show glamour-to -come.

Winter white, strapless cocktail frocks and one-shoulder gowns were the fashion trends that emerged (kindof a snore, but classic). A-list staples (Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman) mixed with the up-and-comers (T-Swift, Ginnifer Goodwin, etc.) - and Mariah Carey provided yet another cringe-worthy appearance complete with an unwalkable gown choice, diamond overload and rambling nonsense in the guise of an acceptance speech.

Nick Cannon? Make it stop.

Jewelry style was appealing and uneventful - with Tarji P. Henson providing the night's biggest lower jaw drop moment: a gemstone cocktail ring the size of a hockey puck. Love the color. Love the gown. Love it all.

Who wore your favorite look of the night? Sandra Bullock in a nude Vivienne Westwood number with barely there jewels? Taylor Swift in winter white and Neil Lane? Weigh in!

People's Choice Awards - A Jewelry Fashion Recap

Last night’s Queen Latifah-hosted People’s Choice Awards kicked awards season off in style, as the red carpet at LA’s Shrine Auditorium positively glittered with stars, frocks and new jewelry looks for our drooling pleasure.

Maybe it’s the economy or maybe it’s the event itself, which celebrates the power of the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, but it looks like we’re seeing an end to the bigger, bolder statement trend and the beginning of a more, shall we say, subtle era. In other words, the celebs kept the ice quotient to a minimum last night - perhaps to keep us in their good graces? And it worked. For the most part.

The World Gold Council recently reported that gold jewelry is seeing an upturn in sales even in these tough economic times, and the stylists proved their point last night. Fashion icon, Debra Messing, glowed in a sculptural Donna Karan number and H.Stern's new Hera earrings in 18K gold. House star Jennifer Morrison honored the metallic trend with a Gianfranco Frere dress and H.Stern's Zephyr earrings in 18K Noble gold; and Jewel, Chandra Wilson, Jordin Sparks and Olivia Wilde rocked their own subtle yellow gold looks.

While there were some signs of the statement trend hanging in there, like Marissa Tomei’s stunning teardrop necklace and Kate Hudson’s oversized earrings and Jack Vartanian black and white cocktail rings, most celebs opted for understated diamond looks instead.

Dancing With the Stars
host, Samantha Harris, is usually dripping in diamonds, but this time she dazzled in small chain-link diamond earrings. A nice touch. Our favorite 90210-er, Jenny Garth, wore a tasteful little boring, I mean, black dress, as did fellow blonde Reese Witherspoon – yet thankfully each of them sprinkled right hand rings and simple diamond earring styles to take things up a notch.

The most unfortunate misstep of the evening did not go to Kathryn Heigl for the pants suit (I’ll let it pass for the Populist Choice awards), but rather to Malin Ackerman, whose sculptural, chunky accessories did nothing to make the unfortunate frock choice any less 'wrong'.

My favorite jewelry fashion star last night, though, had to be Samantha Who?’s Christina Applegate. Again. The A-line Jenny Packham gown sparkled with just enough crystals, and her matching vintage diamond cuff was the right amount of bling to remind us that she’s a star. Who doesn't love this woman is the question? Bravo!

With the Critics Choice Awards tonight on VH1 and the Golden Globes this Sunday, the jewelry hound brigade is in for a long magic red carpet ride right up to the Inauguration - where all fashion hell will surely break loose.

What will the Divine Mrs. Obama wear for gosh sakes already? Diamonds and de la Renta? Gemstones and Gucci? A pearl strand from J. Crew and a pants suit (god forbid)? I can't wait!
